Gümrük ve Turizm Işletmeleri Ticaret A.Ş (GTI) [Customs and Tourism Enterprises Co. Inc.], established in the partnership of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey and 137 Chambers and Commodity Exchanges in 2005, has been modernizing the border gates within the framework of “Build-Operate-Transfer” model. Starting its activities with the modernization of the Habur Border Gate; GTI swiftly completed the reconstruction and renovation of the Cilvegözü, Sarp, Hamzabeyli, Kapıkule and Nusaybin Border Gates. Being the first and single implementer of the modernization of the land border gates based on the “Build-Operate-Transfer” model in Turkey and in the world, GTI is continuing its projects with the other border gates in Turkey.

To meet the passenger needs; food and beverage stores, banks, souvenir shops and duty-free stores are serving. In this framework, GTI only operates the commercial areas, and any administrative processes and procedures such as customs and passport checks are undertaken by the government institutions and bodies.

Under the scope of the reconstruction and renovation works, administrative and commercial buildings, entry – exit control units, search hangars, contraband storages, platforms, weigh bridges, social facilities, and truck park areas were constructed. X-Ray vehicle scanning systems, card pass systems, closed circuit camera and security systems were applied. All of these investments were realized by own resources of GTI.

In addition to taking over the high financing burden of the modernization projects, GTI has created additional tax revenue, and been contributing to the development of foreign trade by increasing the productivity of the border gates. Border waiting time taking hours, have decreased to minutes, and the the queues have been prevented. The vehicle and passenger passing period have increased four times, and the gates are serving to 5 million vehicles and more than 15 million passengers annually.

The main objectives of these projects carried out by the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey and GTI are;

• To facilitate and accelerate traffic flow at the border gates

• To facilitate the customs procedures

• To serve in international standards

• To improve the public opinion on our border gates

The technical improvements with the modernization will assist and enable effective fight against smuggling and human trafficking.
